Thus, the central government is working fast on the ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ scheme. The scheme is being considered for implementation in the country from June 1. Currently, the scheme has been launched in 12 states of the country from January 1, 2020.

Amid the core crisis, the apex court has asked the central government to consider speedy implementation of the ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ scheme. The court said the scheme would provide immediate help to poor and expatriate workers. The court questioned the central government on the possibility of implementing the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme (ONORC) with immediate effect.

What is One Nation, One Ration Card Scheme

‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ is an ambitious scheme of the Central Government, under which the beneficiaries of PDS in the country will get rations from any ration shop under any public distribution system.

This means that the ration card holder of any state will be able to take ration by showing the card in any other state.

Benefits of One Nation, One Ration Card

Once this scheme is implemented, there will be only one type of ration card in the country. Any e-POA among the beneficiaries will be able to take ration from their existing ration card after making the device biometric. Beneficiaries will have to give a thumbs up, this will be the proportion. The use of biometric usage base means that the base will identify the beneficiaries.

The ration card will be of 10 digits

The central government will issue 10-digit ration cards to the states. This number will have a two digit state code and the next two digits will be a ration card number. Apart from that a set of one and two digits will be attached with the ration card number. Ration card portability facility will be introduced across the country to implement this.

The scheme has been running in 12 states of the country since January 1, 2020. The states are Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Jharkhand and Tripura.

What will happen to the old ration card?
The central government has clarified that the old ration card will also continue if the ‘One Nation, One Ration’ card scheme is implemented. It will be updated on the basis of the new rule, which will make it valid across the country.

Fake Ration cards will be banned
The government hopes the scheme will curb corruption and prevent fake ration cards.
