Today, on the anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the whole country is paying homage to this great leader. Atalji is not among us from today. But his contribution to the country, his wonderful speech style and his memories will always keep fresh in the heart of Hindustan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the Atal Tunnel project today on the occasion of the former Prime Minister’s birthday.
The Rohtang tunnel will reduce the distance between Manali and Kelang by about 45 km. The Lahore-Spiti tribal area, which has been cut off from the country and the world for six months due to snowfall in the tunnel, will be connected to the world for 12 months of the year. It is worth mentioning here that this is being considered as the longest traffic tunnel in the world at an altitude of about 12 thousand feet. About Rs 4,000 crore will be spent on its construction.

The Atal Tunnel project to be launched on Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday will be from Manali to Leh. About 80 per cent work of the 8.8 km long project has been completed. It is claimed to be the tallest tunnel in the world. It will open in May 2020.
In the future, this tunnel will also serve as a lifeline for the army deployed in Leh Ladakh. One more tunnel is being constructed below the tunnel, which will be used for rescue operations in an emergency. It is being built by Strobag-Afcon, a joint venture between Austria and India, under the supervision of BRO.
Here is all you need to know about the Atal Tunnel – world’s longest highway tunnel connecting Manali with Leh:
1) The 9.02 Km long tunnel will now connect Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley throughout the year. Earlier the valley was cut off for about 6 months each year owing to heavy snowfall.
2) Atal Tunnel is built with ultra-modern specifications in the Pir Panjal range of Himalayas at an altitude of 3000 mtr (10,000 feet) from the Mean Sea Level (MSL).
3) Atal Tunnel will reduce the road distance by 46 km between Manali and Leh and the time by about 4 to 5 hours.
4) It is a tunnel with a roadway of 8 mtr. It has an overhead clearance of 5.525 mtr.
5) It is 10.5-metre wide and has a 3.6 x 2.25 mtr fire proof emergency egress tunnel built into the main tunnel itself.
6) Atal Tunnel has been designed for traffic density of 3000 cars per day and 1500 trucks per day with max speed of 80 km/hr.
7) It has the state of the art electromechanical system including semi transverse ventilation system, SCADA controlled firefighting, illumination and monitoring system.
8) Atal Tunnel has been completed in a span of 10 years
9) The horseshoe shaped single-tube, double-lane tunnel has many firsts.
10) Atal Tunnel will be not only important from the strategic point of view but also give a boost to tourism in Lahaul-Spiti, creating employment opportunities.

Mr. Modi accused the Congress-led previous governments of not paying heed to border development projects, thereby compromising the nation’s security interests. “Projects related to improved border connectivity either never came out of the planning stage or those which did, got delayed or stuck. The same happened with Atal Tunnel,” he said.

“In 2002, Atalji laid the foundation stone for the approach road of this tunnel and after his government was gone, it seemed that work on this tunnel was forgotten. The situation was like that till 2013-2014; work done on the tunnel was only up to 1,300 metres (1.5 km). Experts say that had the work on the tunnel continued at the same pace, it would have been completed perhaps in year 2040”, said Mr. Modi in a veiled attack on the Congress-led UPA governments.

“It was after 2014 that unprecedented pace was given to the project. Every problem faced by the BRO was resolved. The result was that while earlier 300-metre tunnel work was being accomplished every year, it reached 1,400 metres a year. In six years, we completed the work of 26 years,” he said.
